Nothing can be said accurately about the beginning of Badminton. But it was used to be played in the 17th century in England at a place called "Badminton".
This game was also played in other parts of Europe. In 1934, Badminton Association of India, was formed and first time All India Championship was organised in Calcutta. The "Uber Cup" was started for women's championship in 1957.

TERMINOLOGY RELATED TO THE GAME :-
- BIRD- It is another name for the shuttlecock.
- COURT- It is the playing area enclosed between the back boundary lines and side lines
- LET- The stopping of a play owing to any outside interferance.
- SMASH - It is a stroke in which the shuttle is send downwards with speed to finish a rally.
- RALLY - An exchange of thoughts during a match .
- BACKHAND - Any stroke made on the side of the body opposite the racket side.
- CARRY - An illegal shot where the shuttle does not rebound immediately off the racket at the point of contact.
- CLEAR- A high shot which falls close to the backline.
- CROSS COURT - A shot in which the shuttle crosses the net in a diagonal direction.
